Tickled Black…And Watery!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Sometimes the wheel need not be reinvented, especially when it is in the form of an oscillating mascara wand.  Several cosmetic companies have introduced their version of the vibrating mascara.  The theory behind these new ticklish devices is similar to that of an electronic toothbrush, where the tool not only does the work for you, it does it more effectively.  Allegedly, the motion allows each lash to receive full coverage, thus making your entire bed of lashes fuller and longer than if you use conventional mascara and miss a spot.

Plausible?  Yes.
Practical?  No!

We tried using one of these “new wheels” on set the other day, which resulted in the model jolting backwards, laughing hysterically and blinking profusely as soon as the throbbing wand got near her eye.  Her formerly clear and luminous lids quickly became watery and outlined with black smears!  So, after cleaning up the mess and regaining composure (I caught her infectious laughter), I picked up my “old wheel” and painted a perfectly full lash.

Remember, the most important action in the application of mascara is getting the brush as close to your lash line as possible.  Creating a dark base is more important than coating the rest of your lashes.
