Eye Exam

Friday, August 1st, 2008

You have taken an eye exam at the doctor. And you trust that the doctor knows how to read results and give you the proper diagnosis.
But have you ever given yourself an eye exam…cosmetically?

One of the most common problems I hear about is makeup “running” or “sliding” down faces and onto cheeks. And women who experience this irritation usually switch their eyeliner or mascara. OR, in the worst-case scenario, they give up eye makeup completely. Well that is no fun!
What you must do is examine your eye AND the skin around it.

The Orbital Area

What is your skin type? Knowing that is crucial because it could be your slippery slope. Oily skin that is not properly addressed can cause eye makeup to run. If you have this skin type, use a light eye cream (rather than an emollient one) and apply a touch of powder over your concealer to keep the area dry.
I like:

Avon Anew Intensive Age Treatment PM- While the company says it is for overnight use, I have been using it additionally in the morning and have had zero negative side effects. However, use it at your own risk. Unlike normally thick overnight creams, this one sinks into the skin leaving a great texture for makeup.

Laura Mercier Secret Eye Brightening Powder- Pat into your skin for a locked in brightness that does not cake.

The Eyeliner

Check the formula and the texture of your liner. Long-wear gel eyeliners are wonderful because they are water-based and do not budge. Most lines carry them (Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Stila and Shiseido, for example), but you need to apply them with an eyeliner brush. So, if you prefer using a pencil, look for waterproof or water-resistant formulas. And if you like basic brown or black, a great tip is to use a brow pencil as your eyeliner. Their formulas are tackier for adherence to the skin.
I like:
Maybelline Expert Eyes Twin Brow and Eye Pencil (for brown and black)

Stila Convertible Eye Color (for colors)

The Mascara

Again, the formula should be water-resistant or waterproof.
I like:

Almay Intense I-color- This fattens your lashes and not your wallet! I prefer it in black, though it comes in various colors.

Remember, after you go to the doctor and have your eyes checked, make a follow up visit the mirror and check your own!
